A New Day Dawns for Eyemouth Leisure Centre

Councillor Michael Cook officially re-opened Eyemouth Leisure Centre at 12.00pm on July 29th 2005 in a ceremony to commemorate the £1 million refurbishment the centre has undergone. Mr Cook was joined in the ceremony by Ex Provost Peter Fishbourne.

Michael Cook was a major supporter during the campaign to save the centre from closure in 2002 and will be delighted to see the transformation which has taken place under the management of Border Sport and Leisure Trust. Mr Fishbourne has been invited back to the centre to take part in a ceremony which he originally performed 30 years ago when he officially opened Eyemouth Leisure Centre in 1975.

The refurbishment of the centre, which is managed by Borders Sport and Leisure Trust, demonstrates the commitment of the Trust in developing both the facilities and service offered to the people of the Borders. A considerable transformation has taken place including a new gym extension with separate changing facilities, a new reception area and a new changing village for swimmers. The Trust has also installed several, environmentally friendly operating systems which incorporate energy and labour saving devices to ensure the facility is able to continue serving the community for another 20 years.

The project is a joint venture between Borders Sport and Leisure Trust, Scottish Borders Council and sportscotland.

Ewan Jackson, Chief Executive, Borders Sport and Leisure Trust said: “The Eyemouth Project has been an exciting time for everyone at the Trust. We have made a commitment to the people of the Borders to maintain and enhance the sport and leisure facilities transferred to our care from Scottish Borders Council and the refurbishment at Eyemouth is a great example of this work in progress.

The community of Eyemouth and the customers of the centre will benefit from the vast improvements. The centre will become a place where families can enjoy time together and individuals can come for a challenging workout in the new gym. Sport and leisure come together at this facility and people of all ages and abilities can use the centre to make activity a lifestyle choice.”

Stewart Harris, Acting Chief Executive, sportscotland, said: “We are delighted to have supported the redevelopment of this project with an award of £300,000 from sportscotland’s Lottery funded Sports Facilities Programme. Quality sports facilities play an important role in introducing people of all ages and abilities to the endless hours of enjoyment and fun sports can provide, encouraging people to participate more as part of a healthy, active lifestyle and in the longer term creating a fitter Scotland.

The ceremony was attended by Borders Sport and Leisure Trust Trustees and staff, representatives from Scottish Borders Council and sportscotland. During the ceremony there was a display in the swimming pool and children from the local Swimming Club had a coaching session from Great British swimmer and coach Chris Jones.

Borders trainees leading the way in Leisure Industry

Eight new trainee Personal Fitness Instructors have recently embarked on a unique training programme with Borders Sport and Leisure Trust, which will result in them becoming the first people in Scotland to be trained to SVQ Level 3 Personal Instructor level. This fast-track programme, which has been developed for Borders Sport and Leisure Trust in working partnership with Jewel and Esk Valley College and Scottish Enterprise Borders has given the eight Borderers a unique opportunity to improve the standard of health and fitness provision to the people in the Borders.

The eight Borderers were selected from an outstanding 140 applicants from across Scotland and North Northumberland to enrol as members of the Academy. Borders Sport and Leisure Trust has made a commitment to maintain and enhance the sport and leisure facilities transferred into their care from Scottish Borders Council and the new trainees will become an integral part of this commitment.

Janet Jack, board trustee and lecturer at Jewel and Esk Valley said: "The Borders Sport and Leisure Trust Academy is a bold pioneering initiative that is unique in Scotland. In an industry characterised by low levels of investment in training by employers, the Trust are making a significant commitment to their employees which I am confident will be repaid by huge improvements in customer service and transform the leisure experience for everyone in the Borders. The Trust is setting the standard which others in time must follow"

The training programme will result in all Borders Sport and Leisure Trust facilities being able to offer customers the highest level of expertise in the fitness industry.
